UPDATE 4.5 Hero & Item Balance Changes

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jul 12, 2019

Vainglory Update 4.5 comes with some new tweaks to help your gameplay shine this Summer along with some notes to help you understand the why’s. Check out the balance changes coming for Update 4.5 below!

HEROES

When it comes to choosing her engages, Anka had a little too much freedom in team fights. These changes will dial back that window and make it a bit harder for her to straight up assassinate a full health target.

ANKA

GYTHIAN PROMISE (PERK)

  • Missing Health Damage
    • 19% + 1% per hero level → 20% at all levels

SHIMMER BLADE (A)

  • Blink Available Duration
    • 3.0s → 2.5s

DANCE OF BLADES (B)

  • Multi-hit Damage Reduction
    • 50% → 33%

Blackfeather hasn’t seen a lot of success in recent days. These changes should help him get into back the fight and stay there assuming that he is, uhhhh ‘On Point’ about landing his B Ability.

BLACKFEATHER

FEINT OF HEART (A)

  • Base Damage
    • 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 200 → 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240

ON POINT (B)

  • Barrier Strength
    • 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 / 325 → 125 / 200 / 275 / 350 / 425

Caine is still a touch too strong. With that in mind, these changes should curb Caine’s lane harassment and make it harder for him to execute targets in the late game.

CAINE

TRIPLE TAP (A)

  • Slow Strength
    • 30% / 35% / 40% / 45% / 65% → 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% / 50%

LAST RITES (C)

  • Explosion Damage
    • 225 / 300 / 375 → 125 / 200 / 275
  • Execution Threshold
    • 15% / 20% / 25% → 15% / 17.5% / 20%

Celeste traditionally had one of the lowest cooldowns and highest damage output of any mage in the game. Now she’ll have to be a little more mindful about her Heliogenesis placement, so play smart!

CELESTE

HELIOGENESIS (A)

  • Cooldown
    • 2.8s / 2.4s / 2.0s / 1.6s / 1.2s → 2.8s / 2.6s / 2.4s / 2.2s / 1.8s
  • Star Duration
    • 8s → 10s

SOLAR STORM (C)

  • Lead Star Crystal Ratio
    • 100% → 80%
  • Trailing Star Crystal Ratio
    • 20% → 15%

The disparity between the damage Joule sustains on the back versus the front was massive, so we gave her a bit of a bump to her base stats. We also turned her Thunder Strike into weapon damage so she can take advantage of piercing & Breaking Point a bit better.

JOULE

STATS

  • Armor (Levels 1 – 12)
    • 25 – 75 → 35 – 100
  • Shield (Levels 1 – 12)
    • 20 – 55 → 25 – 75

THUNDER STRIKE

  • Base damage is now weapon instead of crystal
  • Weapon Power Ratio
    • 200% → 220%

Kestrel hasn’t been as much of a favorite these days when compared to other carries. These changes should strengthen her weapon path and grant her a little more safety in teamfights.

KESTREL

GLIMMER SHOT (A)

  • Basic Attack Weapon Ratio
    • 105% / 110% / 115% / 120% / 125% → 110% / 115% / 120% / 125% / 135%

ACTIVE CAMO (B)

  • Base Stealth Duration
    • 1.0s → 1.2s

KRUL

Despite the changes last patch, Krul still just isn’t as scary as he needs to be, so we’re strengthening his early game a bit and making it easier for him to stalk his foes in the jungle.

SHADOWS EMPOWER ME (PERK)

  • Brush Charge Time
    • 1.0s → 0.7s

SPECTRAL SMITE (B)

  • Damage Per Stack
    • 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 90 → 25 / 40 / 55 / 70 / 100
  • Heal Per Stack
    • 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 40 → 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 50

LEO

Leo’s buffs from the last patch, though well intended,  were causing him to do a liiiiiitttle too much damage when combined with the empowerment from Lion’s Might. These changes should make him much more reasonable, leveling out his burst, especially when it comes to the late game.

CRUSHING STRIKE (A)

  • Weapon Ratio
    • 320% → 300%

LION’S MIGHT (C)

  • Empowerment Bonus
    • 10% / 25% / 40% → 15% at all levels
  • Lion’s Might: Crushing Strike Bleed Weapon Ratio
    • 100% → 50%
  • Lion’s Might: Crushing Strike Bleed Duration
    • 4s → 3s

MALENE

A lot of Malene’s damage comes from her basic attacks which are essentially unavoidable, so we decided to shift some of that power into other parts of her kit for the greater good.

MASKED BALL (PERK)

  • Basic Attack Crystal Power Ratio
    • 60% → 50%

LIGHT RIBBONS (A1)

  • Crystal Power Ratio
    • 100% → 110%

SHADOW TENDRILS (A2)

  • Crystal Power Ratio
    • 60% → 65%

ENCHANTED TRANSFORMATION (C)

  • Dark Form Empowerment Crystal Power Ratio
    • 80% → 50%
  • Dark Form Empowerment Base Damage
    • 40 / 80 / 120 / 160 → 30 / 60 / 90 / 120

SAMUEL

Samuel has been one of the top mages for a little while now. We like to keep things interesting and fresh around here, so this should bring him more in line with other mid laners.

MALICE AND VERDICT (A)

  • Crystal Ratio
    • 100% → 90%
  • Empowered Crystal Ratio
    • 110% → 100%

SILVERNAIL

Silvernail has fallen out of favor in the carry lineup, so we wanted to bump him back up a bit. This should give the grizzled hunter a needed boost to his crossbow.

DOUBLE SHOT (PERK)

  • Base Reload Time
    • 4.5s → 4.0

SKAARF

The general movement speed changes have made it a little difficult for Skaarf to find his place in the meta. These changes should help him land his core ability a little easier.

SPITFIRE (A)

  • Projectile Speed
    • 12.5 → 14.5
  • Crystal Power Ratio
    • 90% → 110%

GOOP (B)

  • Unignited Slow Strength
    • 30% → 40%
  • Ignited Slow Strength
    • 15% → 20%

TAKA

Triple Tyrants Monocle + Tension Bow Taka has been running amok at higher tiers. His House Kamuha perk was giving a lot of bonus damage to players who decided to stack crit and gave him the ability to outduel just about anyone. This should take him back down a notch and make things more reasonable.

HOUSE KAMUHA (PERK)

  • Damage from Mortal Strikes can no longer crit
  • Movement Speed Bonus
    • 2.0 → 1.7

VOX

Crystal Vox’s resonance bounces during the laning phase makes it a little too easy to harass the enemy laner and translates into massive AoE damage during team fights. This will tone down his crystal path a bit while redistributing some of his power into weapon builds.

JULIA’S SONG (PERK)

  • Resonance Crystal Ratio
    • 85% → 70%

SONIC ZOOM (A)

  • Basic Attack Damage on Overdrive
    • 50% → 70%

WARHAWK

Warhawk’s bravado just wasn’t enough to stand up to the villains in the last patch so we’re giving him a helping hand. This should make it easier for him to land an empowered basic attack after Rocket Ride as well as giving his ultimate more distinctive usage depending on his build path.

MK-II ANNABELLE (PERK)

  • Basic Attack Range Bonus
    • 2.0 → 4.0

ROCKET RIDE (A)

  • Cooldown
    • 12s / 11.5s / 11s / 10.5s / 9s → 10s / 9.5s / 9s / 8.5s / 7s
  • Energy Cost
    • 45 / 55 / 65 / 75 / 85 → 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50
  • Base Damage
    • 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 325 → 95 / 145 / 195 / 245 / 345
  • Crystal Ratio
    • 110% → 125%

VACUUM GRENADE (B)

  • Energy Cost
    • 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 → 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60
  • Stun Duration
    • 0.3s → 0.5s
  • Overdrive Stun Bonus
    • 0.6s → 1.0s

MIGHTIEST BARRAGE (C)

  • Weapon Ratio on Impact
    • 80% → 200%
  • Crystal Ratio on Impact
    • 100% → 70%
  • Crystal Ratio on Burn
    • 70% → 100%
  • Slow Strength
    • 15% / 25% / 35% → 25% / 35% / 45%
  • Burn Damage Per Second
    • 140 + 60 per level → 180 + 60 per level

ITEMS

CELESTIAL SHROUD

We’re giving Celestial Shroud an easier build path that also helps players by letting them hold onto a reflex block during the mid game. The item’s final state is still passive, but now you have a block while you’re building!

  • Now builds from Reflex Block + Kinetic Shield
  • New stats
    • +300 Health
    • +95 Shield

REFLEX BLOCK

The cooldown for Reflex Block was too high, making it difficult to have it available enough during important teamfights.

  • Active cooldown
    • 120s → 90s

AEGIS

  • Active cooldown
    • 60s → 45s

Update: Permanent Experience Boost Bug

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jun 19, 2019

Good news everyone! Our developers have been hard at work in the Lair and have managed to isolate and fix the bug causing lower than expected experience rewards for the permanent exp boost feature. We initially thought this to be a visual bug but thanks to our community we were able to track down and confirm this was a genuine bug in the way the boost was working. We have done some internal testing and have confirmed this now appears to be working as intended.

We understand that many of you were frustrated having bought the boost, only to find that it wasn’t working as intended. As a sign of our appreciation for your patience and help with getting to the bottom of this issue we are gifting 100 ICE and 1000 Glory to any account with an active permanent exp boost during update 4.4. This means if you purchase a permanent exp boost this update you will also be eligible for this gift. If you have an active boost you can claim this gift in the market under the “featured tab” from next Wednesday (26th June!).

Thank you again for your patience.

HERO ABILITIES

MK-II ANNABELLE (PERK)

After casting an ability, Warhawk’s next basic attack has increased range and deals bonus CP damage.

UPDATE 4.4 Hero & Item Balance Changes

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jun 15, 2019

Just in time for Summer, Vainglory Update 4.4 brings some needed tune-up’s and tone-down’s (Caine *cough, cough*) with it to help you kick off the season right. Check out the balance changes coming for Update 4.4 below!

HEROES

While this may look like a small change, it has a big impact on Alpha’s overall power. Stay at max stacks to see a big jump in overall damage.

ALPHA

CORE CHARGE

  • Max Core Overload Stacks
    • 3 → 4

As players became accustomed to Caine’s playstyle, his win rate started to climb dramatically. We’ve adjusted his power level to be more reasonable and his Once More should be a lot less available for players who don’t invest in cooldown.

CAINE

PEACEMAKER (PERK)

  • Bonus Basic Attack Damage
    • 115% → 110%
  • Reloading Speed Boost
    • 2.0 → 1.3

TRIPLE TAP (A)

  • Weapon Ratio
    • 125% → 115%
  • Range
    • 9.5 → 8.0

ONCE MORE (B)

  • Cooldown Reduction on Basic Attack
    • 1.5s → 1.0s

Catherine’s shield tends to be come down very quickly as games progress, especially in 5v5. These changes should make it a little easier for her to stay in the fight and get stacks safely in the early game.

CATHERINE

STATS

  • Base Armor
    • 30 → 35
  • Armor Per Level
    • 5 → 5.91
  • Shield Per Level
    • 3.6 → 4.6

MERCILESS PURSUIT (A)

  • Cooldown
    • 16/15/14/13/12 → 14/13/12/11/10

STORMGUARD (B)

  • Cooldown
    • 8.0 / 7.5 / 7.0 / 6.5 / 6.0 → 10 / 9.5 / 9.0 / 8.5 / 8.0
  • Base Duration
    • 3s → 4s
  • Shield Duration Reduction Per Proc
    • 0.4s → 0.2s

Inara’s team movement speed boost gave her amazing utility in coordinated play but felt lacking everywhere else. These changes give her abilities more significant overdrive incentives and allow players to choose to lean more heavily into damage or utility.

INARA

DANCE OF LEAVES

  • Damage
    • 80/140/200/260/320 → 80/140/200/260/480

BANISHING KICK

  • Damage
    • 60/90/120/150/180 → 60/120/180/240/360

NATURE’S WRATH

  • Move Speed Duration
    • 10 → 7/8/9

Krul has been struggling for the last few updates, so we wanted to show him some love. This change should help him get to max stacks faster,  where he is most effective.

KRUL

FROM HELL’S HEART

  • Now applies 2/3/4 stacks of Weakness based on level

Some players seem to have been struggling with Leo during his debut due to his his low defensive stats and telegraphed abilities. These changes are targeted towards making him last a little longer in fights while also making his abilities feel more rewarding to hit.

LEO

STATS

  • Base Health
    • 702 → 830
  • Health Per Level
    • 148 → 160
  • Base Armor
    • 30 → 35
  • Base Shield
    • 20 → 25
  • Shield Per Level
    • 3.6 → 4.6
  • Base Weapon Power
    • 80 → 95
  • Weapon Power Per Level
    • 8.0 → 9.0

CRUSHING STRIKE (A)

  • Damage Overdrive Bonus
    • 90/160/230/300/370 → 90/180/270/360/540
  • Weapon Ratio
    • 280% → 320%

LION’S FURY (C)

  • Base Damage
    • 200 / 300 / 400 → 250 / 375 / 500

Just a little quality-of-life change that helps Munions keep up with Petal when she uses trampoline or gets a speed boost!

PETAL

MUNIONS

  • Movement Speed
    • 5.0 → 6.0

As hero movement speed increased, Rona struggled to stick to her enemies while in the middle of her Whirlwind. This should make it a little easier for her to chase.

RONA

WHIRLWIND

  • Self Slow
    • 20% → 10%
  • Fortified Life Gain
    • 100 / 150 / 200 → 100 / 200 / 300

ITEMS

Atlas Pauldron was a niche item that specifically stopped attack speed carries that didn’t rely on their abilities. This created unclear gameplay as it was much more effective against heroes like Ringo while being fairly useless against heroes like Caine or Joule. With these changes Atlas Pauldron should be a solid purchase for any Captain when facing against a weapon power threat.

ATLAS PAULDRON

  • Attack Speed Debuff
    • 65% → 50%
  • Debuff now also reduces outgoing weapon damage by 30%

Thats all the changes coming in 4.4 ! Keep your eyes open for the 4.4 Update notes coming soon!

Friend List Database Migration for Update 4.4

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jun 10, 2019

Important news everyone! In update 4.4 we will be migrating our friends list database for all Vainglory accounts.

Why you ask? To put it simply, we are moving the database to improve performance issues related to the friends list. This should alleviate issues particularly for people with huge numbers of friends, especially if a large chunk of those friends are currently inactive.

How does this affect you? This database migration will be taking place during the 4.4  Update. Anyone that logs into their account during Update 4.4 will automatically send friend requests to everyone on their previous friends list. Friends that were on your list will automatically send friend requests back to you when they update and log in, resulting in them appearing on your friends list again automatically. (No, you will not have to manually accept/decline hundreds of requests!) This change will have little to no impact on active accounts, as your friends who are online regularly will automatically appear on your friends list again once they log in to Update 4.4.

Important Note!:  Anyone who does NOT log in during update 4.4 will have their friends list wiped. If you want to keep your friends list intact, you MUST log in to Vainglory during the 4.4 Update Cycle. The aim with this change is to reduce the size of players friends lists who have inactive friends,  helping boost game performance and reduce strain on the friends list database.

Friends List Cap: With this migration, the friends list will also be capped to a maximum of 500 friends. We are aware that some players may need a cap that exceeds this number and we will adjust this value on an individual basis for people that require the higher cap. But wait, I have more than 500 friends, will they all get invites? Yes, to reiterate, all of your current friends on your list will receive an automatic invite when you log in to Update 4.4. The first 500 of those friends who log in to Update 4.4 will automatically friend you back!

Wrapping it up, make sure you LOG IN at least once during Update 4.4 to retain your active friends list as you will automatically send friend requests to your previous friends list upon logging in. See you in 4.4!

How we tackle bugs.

  • Vainglory
  • |
  • Jun 05, 2019

Hey all!

As part of our continued focus on communication I wanted to share a little insight into the bug fixing process that happens at SEMC. We receive many, many, many bug reports through our ticketing system (at this current time we have over 1000 reports in the log being worked through) and for our engineers to target those reports they need to work through them on a case-by-case basis attempting to reproduce the bugs themselves.

Our talented engineers have a large list of bugs that are currently being fixed for the 4.4 cycle (bugs do also get hotfixed live too, if they are critical). I wanted to share some, but not all, of the bugs currently being worked on for the next cycle:

  • Bugged quests (several bugs relating to quests including quests not being available and some quests not progressing)
  • ARAL not consistently available in private parties
  • Profile UI blank for some accounts
  • Party UI ‘flickering’ when users tap on the chat field
  • 3V3 ranks not being rewarded after the first few games
  • PC client issues including black UI assets and inability to center on hero with spacebar
  • Players unable to open level chests
  • Points not being added after a victory
  • Unable to double rewards by watching ads
  • Sometimes causing a grey screen when moving between elements of the game
  • A number of critical bugs in the Chinese client specifically

These are not all the bugs currently being worked on, but they are a selection of bugs being worked out for update 4.4.

Why is a heavily reported bug not on the list or not fixed yet you may ask?

This could be for numerous reasons. Firstly whenever a bug is reported the team needs to attempt to reproduce the bug themselves whilst monitoring areas of the code to see which part is being affected and what specifically needs fixing – not all bugs are easily reproducible and not many bug reports have reproduction instructions. While we do try to catch and fix as many as possible before each release, sometimes things manage to slip through and make trouble for all of us. We’re here to help, and while we’re here, we’d like to help you understand what we need to know to investigate. As many of you know, one of the first responses you are likely to get when you come across a bug in the game and post it somewhere is, “Did you report it?”. Reporting bugs is one of the most helpful steps you can take, but in order for us to address the reported bugs, we need some specific information. The following things greatly increase our chances of being able to reproduce and ultimately fix that annoying bug you are experiencing. Here is the basic info we need to start looking into your issue:

  • What is the bug or issue?
  • Can you consistently make the bug happen?
  • How do you make it happen? Step-by-step instructions to reproduce the bug are invaluable.
  • What do you think the correct behaviour should be?
  • What’s your IGN and Server Region?
  • Do you play  on Mobile or Computer?
  • What device and Operating System (OS) version are you using?

Secondly, as we continue to add new content and fix existing bugs on an update-by-update basis, more bugs will pop up. These can be anything from minor inconveniences to major game breaking bugs that should not make it to live! Here is a small video showcasing some of the more interesting PBE bugs that we have to deal with before we push an update live.

We also find that when we fix one bug it creates more issues and sometimes bug fixing can be a cascading chain where fixing one thing creates 99 problems you never knew you had.

If you want to help us please make sure you read the bug reporting instructions above to learn how to effectively report a bug! Reproduction instructions are incredibly useful and help our team with the isolation of the bug allowing it to be targeted for a fix! Of course, some bugs just aren’t this simple and fixes will take longer but we hope to get as many of them as we can before each update goes live!

Cheers,

A word on the API and Vainglory Esports

Reviving regular communication is something that we are focused on improving here at SEMC; especially as we take our next step into becoming a multi-title game development company. We want to take this time to address some of the topics that often pop up on various social media platforms in the hopes that we can create an honest and open dialogue with you, our community. As we move forward, and begin to build on the Vainglory universe in new and exciting ways, we want to include you in the journey.

As most of our players know, the API has been out of action for some time now and we’d like to take a moment to explain what happened and what the status is for the API currently. The Vainglory API was originally developed and managed by our partners MADGLORY; they did an amazing job building it. The API showcased how Vainglory data could be visualized in practical, fun and informative ways,  however, from the outset, the API was designed to be maintained externally. The development team was ultimately acquired in 2018; and support of the Vainglory API was shifted to our internal team within Super Evil. As things progressed, supporting the full function of API in its current iteration became more and more difficult for the team to keep up with, due to the pace of our update cycles and shifts in focus. We’ve tried our best to adjust what we’ve been able to support and how we can best achieve that since then but ultimately it proved too difficult a situation to resolve. We hope to explore this further down the road; but at this time we have hit pause. We want to give a huge shout out and thank you to the API development community for all of your patience and hard work in building with us on this journey and being a core thread in the fabric of the game.

Secondly we want to take a moment to talk about Vainglory esports and our decision to shift focus away from it. Our goal with Vainglory has always been to build a deep and immersive gaming experience on mobile; the nature of the game combined with the depth Vainglory had to offer naturally gave rise to an immediately competitive community. What began as an endeavour to create tools for our budding esports players (at one point there were no spectator slots!) quickly snowballed into a full-scale esports production ran by our entire team at the lair. The passion we had and the experiences we tried to create for our most engaged community fueled our passion to build the esports programme; but it very quickly became clear that the planning, resourcing and running of our esports events sapped huge amounts of time away from our development team and ultimately the development of the game itself. Esports is something that we’re hugely passionate about but the sacrifices we had to make at the time to keep it afloat weren’t worth the results. Our changing strategy has meant we have had to take a more supportive role in esports, allowing our partners and community (we see you EPL!) to take the leading role when it comes to organisation. We will continue to support esports initiatives when they present themselves but the mainstay of our focus will always be on the development of rich and engaging gaming experiences such as Vainglory itself.

Expect more regular communication from us in the coming weeks (in blogs, in vods, in streams… ) where we will share more developer updates (yes including the status of bugs where we can!), developments on upcoming projects, and our roadmap for Vainglory!

An Update from the Lair

  • Vainglory

Vainglory began with a vision to bring an uncompromising MOBA experience to mobile gamers across the world. We wanted to show that touch controls could parallel traditional PC controls and in some cases even surpass them. From our initial release of Kindred, as a beta in Singapore, all the way to the release of 5v5 and our cross-platform vision we have tried to innovate and bring the best possible experience to players. We have been on an incredible journey with you; from our keynote on the Apple stage to having one hundred thousand concurrent viewers for our world championships in 2017. We even have an entire iPhone ad centered around our game.

We’ve learned so much. We were too enthusiastic with our esports programme and whilst it was a wonderful journey it wasn’t sustainable and it didn’t achieve what we thought it might when we initially set out. We’ve struggled to maintain good, frequent communications with the community; we want to get this right for the future to ensure that we maintain a strong bond with our community going forward. We also know that 5v5 didn’t resonate with the wider audience the way we thought it might and although we are incredibly proud of the product itself it’s something that definitely split our existing player base. What we want you to know however is we are listening; we read everything that goes up online, we play the game daily and we are constantly looking to make positive changes within Vainglory. The lessons that Vainglory has taught us will continue with SEMC for our developmental life.

At SEMC we believe gamers deserve to play together in beautiful, responsive and deep AAA experiences, whichever their native platform or control mechanism. We are always looking to push the boundaries of technological capability; bringing a MOBA to the mobile platform with true touch screen controls, pushing the limits of graphical capabilities on mobile devices and bringing Vainglory to the forefront of cross-platform parity with our launch onto PC and MAC. However, we want you to be on the same page as us to be as open as possible with our community. We feel Vainglory is in a good spot as a package right now. Our goal with Vainglory development is now to refine the game. Continue to expect month to month updates; bringing balance changes, new heroes and all the regular content you have come to expect. Our main focus will be fixing existing bugs and polishing the overall gameplay; both ingame and out (sorry guys, nothing crazy like 10v10 in the works).

We actually want to let you in on an evil secret. For some time now our creative geniuses have been working hard on multiple new projects alongside Vainglory (shh!). We aren’t sharing details yet, but what we can tell you is that you may see the Vainglory universe expanding in the future, in more places than one. We also have some other surprises coming, so expect a lot of announcements over the next few months as we continue to evolve the way we work and release content. Keep your eyes peeled this coming Winter for some big news and your chance to get involved in the future fun.

Vainglory has been an amazing journey so far and we intend to continue to support and care for Vainglory as much as we did before – especially as we continue to focus on China as an emerging market for the game. We just wanted to share our plans with you, our community, and to let you know about some of the exciting things we have in store as well as reflect on some of the lessons we have learnt throughout the development of our first title.

We created Vainglory for you to enjoy and we will continue to enjoy the game with you for years to come but we also hope you will continue to support us and share in the exciting adventure that is just around the corner.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the support over the years.
